Walk down to Salamanca Place in Hobart, on the water (where the market is held every weekend) and at dusk you can find the best dinner in Hobart and possibly Australia. Fresh Tasmanian fish. Stunning views. Plenty of space to sit and admire the sunset. And nothing over $10. Afterwards, head to glamorous bars and pubs all along the waterfront for a glass of Tasmanian wine or coffee.
HOW TO FIND YOUR BOAT
Look for the two boats with queues, right near Mure’s famous seafood restaurant, and be prepared to wait your turn with a numbered ticket. At Flippers you can order battered Trevalla for $7 or crumbed Blue Grenadier for $6. Tasmanian scallops, famous the world over, can be crumbed or battered for just $1.50 each. Fishy Business, next to Flippers (pictured below, top left) is just as cheap and cheerful but the chips come in huge helpings and the benches nearby offer the best waterfront dining around, with the option of a stroll to admire the boats afterwards. The huge floodlit Henry Jones building, five minutes’ walk away, holds an excellent bar where you might want to finish the evening. Just look for the legend saying H.JONES & CO.
