Vivid Nights at the Marriott, Sydney

The Marriott is possibly the best positioned hotel from which to base yourself for a tour of the Vivid Sydney festival, being neatly located halfway between the Opera House and the Rocks – and is lit up itself as an added bonus.

The service at the Marriott is also fit for a first class goddess, at  business class rates. We’re offered a free glass of bubbly as we check-in, which takes the edge off the paperwork nicely. Well worth checking out is their Executive Lounge on the 30th floor which offers sweeping city views, a nice little selection of complimentary alcoholic beverages and some decent nibbles to match.

We stock up before heading out into the cold winter Sydney evening to marvel at the lights. Right now, it’s the middle of winter and Sydney is almost as crowded as New Years Eve. People do like pretty lights.

Heading west (through the crowds) we stop at the MCA – my favourite attraction last year – and it doesn’t fail to impress this year either with an amazing display of animation.

The lights continue along the waterfront all the way to the end of Walsh Bay with a great selection of interactive displays. There’s also a good view of the Opera House with a giant woman crawling over it at one point before it seemingly ‘deflates’.

Back at Circular Quay, Customs House has a quirky animated sequence occupying its façade that includes busy city scenes and even planes flying over it.

We arrive back at the Marriott just in time for our dinner reservation at Icon’s Seafood Buffet (now ravenous after that walk). Sumptuous is probably a good word to describe it.

Our room, a king suite has one of the largest, softest beds in the world. Bliss. After another sumptuous breakfast (again, at the Executive Lounge) we head back to MCA for some daytime art installations.
