La Perouse, Sydney – Ice Cream and Boomerangs

Sydneysider Louise Hawson discovers La Perouse for the first time – and loves it.

Once you’ve seen the Sydney Harbour Bridge and wandered around the Opera House, there’s really not much more to do in Sydney right? Wrong! Sydney has so many amazing hidden gems that you’ll never read about in the tourist guides. In fact, they’re so secret that even people who live here don’t know about them.

Take the suburb of La Perouse for example. Plenty of people have heard of the suburb just south of Maroubra but few have actually visited it. Like me. I’d heard of ‘La Pa’ but before this year I had never thought to go there. I had no mental image of the place so it didn’t really exist in my mind. Then I started on a mission to explore my own city. And I went to La Pa.

Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. It’s so beautiful and so rich with history. And there’s so much to do. You can go fishing there, scuba dive or visit the old fort. Alternatively you can just plonk yourself down on the grass, stare at the amazing view and eat ice cream. Oh, and you can also buy yourself a real boomerang, one that will actually come back. Provided of course you throw it the right way in the first place. Enjoy!
