For some travellers the thought of stepping on a plane in 2020 does nothing but trigger excitement and joy, but for others a journey by train is becoming much more appealing for a variety of reasons.

For some this preference towards train travel may be triggered by environmental concerns (with emissions from train travel likely to be much less than a domestic flight), experiential (while the view from the sky can be sensational, most of the time flyers are looking down on cloud so miss out on much of the countries they’re flying over) and now added to the mix is the unconfirmed theory that travelers may be reducing their exposure to viruses by eliminating or reducing time spent in airports or planes with hundreds of others by switching to train travel instead.

If you are leaning towards a holiday featuring train as your main mode of transport a great place to start your research is the award winning book by Monisha RajeshAround the World in 80 Trains’. In the book Monisha writes about her time spent on an unforgettable adventure that took her from London’s St Pancras station to the vast expanses of Russia and Mongolia, North Korea, Canada, Kazakhstan and beyond. No doubt you will find a trip in this book that will pique your interest.

And Amtrak are certainly happy with the consumer trend towards train travel, they announced in their most recent company annual report that due to Amtrak’s record ridership and revenue in 2019, marking its third straight year of improvements, the railroad may be on track to break even for the first time in its five-decade history in 2020!

Added note: just announced by the Western Australian government this week on the 50th anniversary since the Indian Pacific was launched, is the plan to extend the journey of the famed Indian Pacific train, which begins its 4352km journey in Sydney, so as soon to finish (or begin) it’s epic passage in Freemantle instead of East Perth, making it a true coast-to-coast trip.
