Burgh Island Hotel situated off the coast at Bigbury-on-Sea, is perfect for any Art Deco fan. If the tide is in, you get to take the sea tractor across to the island, and as you step into the hotel you step back in time. The glamour of the Roaring Twenties is evident everywhere, from the communal areas to the rooms to the cocktails. The island is small and can be explored easily, there’s the Mermaid pool for keen bathers – even in winter people plunge in for a dip, but the hotel and the Pilchard Inn, an old pub (built in 1336) on the island will keep you happy for your entire stay. The Island has a rich history; Agatha Christie frequented the island, which inspired the setting for two of her books: ‘And Then There Were None’ and the Poirot mystery ‘Evil Under The Sun,’ which was filmed there. You can even stay in her beach house, where she did much of her writing. Edward V11 visited with Wallis and apparently they tried surfing. Noel Coward was also a frequent visitor apparently, adding to the literary history of the Island. Dress for dinner which is often accompanied by live music, so you can dance the night away. The food is amazing, the cocktails delicious, the music magical, there is a real party atmosphere. It’s an inspiring and unique hotel and a place which even if you visit once will stay with you forever.
