Catch America’s First Sunrise in St. Croix

"This 215 kilometers squared island is a pure slice of Caribbean heaven!  Located less than 100km south of the British Virgin Islands, St. Croix is an eco-tourist's dream destination!"

As you peer out your airplane window, the beautiful azure waters lay below, and the warm embrace of Cruzan culture awaits you upon deplaning. Welcome to St. Croix, the largest island in the United States Virgin Islands trilogy.

This 215 kilometers squared island is a pure slice of Caribbean heaven!  Located less than 100km south of the British Virgin Islands, St. Croix is an eco-tourist’s dream destination! There are many outdoorsy activities on this little island that can easily be circumnavigated in a day. The best way to see the island and allow yourself the flexibility to do it all is to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle. (PS – they drive in the left lane here).

Located at the eastern end of St. Croix, is Point Udall. Identified by the Millenium Monument, this quiet spot is the Eastern most point of the United States of America and the first to see the sun. Be sure to plan for one early morning to make your way east and watch the sunrise before everyone else. There is a stone wall that you can sit on, so bring along your morning coffee and a snack and stay a while, the view is glorious!

One of the unique libations you’ll find on St. Croix is ‘Mutiny Island Vodka’, the world’s first breadfruit derived spirit. Widely found in the Caribbean, breadfruit is a gluten free fruit that is incredibly versatile. And don’t leave St. Croix without tasting a local variation of mamajuana (pronounced mama-wanna) the island has to offer. Mama ju-what? This blend of rum, red wine, honey and proprietary spice blend is said to have originated in the Dominican Republic, but the Cruzans brew their own version.

Other “can’t miss”, natural features include the Buck Island National Monument, and the Analy Bay tide pools. There are also 10 great snorkeling spots on the island, accessible from the beach, and if you didn’t pack your gear, you can rent it from one of the local shops.

If architecture and history are more your cup of tea, you’ll want to visit the labyrinth at Estate Mount Washington, and Forts Frederiksted and Christansvaern. It’s easy to spend a week here and not be bored.

Just as every version of mamjauana has an exclusive blend of “spices” that make it unique, so do the islands of the Caribbean. It’s easy to see why St. Croix’s motto is “A Vibe Like No Other”.

For your next vacation, set your compass to airport code STX!
