Keira Knightly is a fan and so are we. Come to this historic family-run store (also favoured by Anthony Bourdain) for the most delicious bagels and lox, or some Japanese-style caviar.
The family began by selling strings of Polish mushrooms on their backs, at the turn of last century. Today, Russ & Daughters is a New York classic and it’s guaranteed foodie bliss. This famous Jewish family has its latest ‘daughter’ (Niki Russ Federman) on board and the famous caviar, herring and smoked salmon is still on sale.
This place has charm, class and style – but it also has wicked picnic ingredients for spring or summer in Central Park. (Or if you exchanged your home, for the kitchen). Ronald Reagan ordered the smoked salmon for his inauguration from here. The bagels come by the dozen, which is great if you’re sharing. The caviar menu is perfectly pitched. All you really need is some Mother of Pearl spoons and a tub of crème fraiche to complete the menu.
Japanese visitors love the wasabi roe. It’s the sandwiches, however, which are regularly awarded New York’s Best. Try the Mini Yum Kippered Sandwich. Pick one up and eat it on the bench outside!
