Eat, love, dine like Gwyneth Paltrow

Oscar-winning movie star and celebrity foodie Gwyneth Paltrow has no reservations when it comes to recommending her favorite hometown restaurants to Holiday Goddess editor Vicki Arkoff.

Gwyneth Paltrow talks, writes, and broadcasts about her foodie obsession with the enthusiasm of a religious zealot.  But I’m not entirely convinced. After all, the huge actress from Shallow Hall (OK, so it was a fat suit) and The Avengers, cooking-show host of Spain on the Road Again (with sweet, rotund chef Mario Batali), and author of cookbooks including My Father’s Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness (Grand Central ) is as thin as a CD by her Coldplay hubby Chris Martin.

“I eat organic food and lots of whole grains,” explains the former macrobiotic eater. “I eat locally and I eat seasonally.”  OK, so that’s why Gwyneth weighs less than a menu – something she’s intimately familiar with having read hundreds of them while dining around the world.

Gwyneth raises her young family in London, and vacations at their New York beach house, but the Los Angeles native finds herself returning home often for work  — like her recurring role in the hit Fox show Glee and films like Iron Man, Contagion and Country Strong – and even more often for good food.  “I cook four to five nights a week, even when I travel,” says Gwyneth, who relishes the opportunity to travel hundreds of miles to eat well whether that means cooking in her own kitchen with friends like Jamie Oliver, or letting other top chefs cook for her at dining hot spots.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s favorite restaurants in Los Angeles:

Chateau Marmont:  A Sunset Strip landmark, this historic luxury hotel with lobby-level restaurant has catered to Hollywood stars since the 1930’s. “The atmosphere is incredible,” says Gwyneth.  The restaurant is one of L.A.’s sexiest spots – especially the outdoor terrace tables under the palms – and nearly has more stars per seat than the Oscars.  8221 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood. (323) 656-1010. www.chateaumarmont.com/barmarmont.php

Gjelina:   Located within walking distance of Venice Beach, this charming farm-to-table café is locally adored for its thin-crusted pizzas, but also wins accolades for its extensive vegetable menu featuring treats like grilled king oyster mushrooms with tarragon butter. Gwyneth’s go-to order is smoked mozzarella pizza with confit tomato, jalapeño, arugula, lemon and Bottarga caviar. 1429 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice. (310) 450-1429. www.gjelina.com

The Hungry Cat: Gwyneth goes for “the wonderful seafood” like the house-cured salmon from the raw bar, or Dungeness crab served on house-made papardelle.  100 W. Channel Road (at Pacific Coast Highway), Santa Monica Canyon. (310) 459-0029. www.thehungrycat.com.  Two other locations in Hollywood and Santa Barbara, where Gwyneth graduated college and married Chris. How delicious is that?

The L.A My Way series by Vicki Arkoff on Holiday Goddess takes in comedy clubs, night life (with Ian Somerhalder), clubs (with Kirsten Vangsness), Los Angeles secrets (with Joel McHale), hotels (with Sharon Osbourne) and even geek life.
