Sydney’s Royal Bars

She met him at The Slip Inn (Wikimedia)

Crown Princess Mary met her future husband, the heir to the Danish throne, at the Slip Inn, a classic Sydney bar.

The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips met her future husband, Mike Tindall, at the Manly Wharf Bar when Prince Harry introduced them.

What are they putting in the drinks in Sydney, Australia that so attracts people with their own coat of arms?

THE MANLY WHARF HOTEL

Take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly.

There’s something about Manly that lures British travellers like no other part of Sydney. The ferry ride from Circular Quay (take the train there and switch to the boat) is spectacular. The waterside views are great when you finally arrive. And then there is the knowledge that Prince Harry, Zara Phillips or Mike Tindall might just return to the scene of the crime.

The Manly Wharf Hotel has a surprisingly affordable menu and the dress code is rather like the interior – chic and casual. It’s seriously sporty all year round and a favourite with rugby fans. It’s also a short walk from the famous beaches of Manly.

The menu is great. Sink back and enjoy the view.

THE SLIP INN

The Slip Inn is open from 10.00am to midnight, Monday to Thursday and on Friday from 10.00am to 2.00am. On Saturday, it opens from 5.00pm to 2.00am. Find it at 111 Sussex Street, in the heart of Sydney. You can book events here (like a royal wedding reception) too.

The menu is under $20 and falls under the category ‘classic Australian pub cuisine.’

There is nothing pretentious about this –

Chicken burrito, cajun chicken filled tortilla baked and topped with cheese, guacamole & sour cream. The Slip steak sandwich, Toasted sourdough, grain fed sirloin, onion jam, salad greens, tomato relish and mustard aioli. The Slip burger, prime grain fed Aussie beef, lettuce, tomato, red onion, beetroot, aioli & tomato relish with aged cheddar & smoky bacon.

The closest station is Wynyard Station, take the York Street exit, walk down York Street until you reach Erskine street. Turn right and walk 200 metres down the hill.

There is also a happy hour (Australian wine delight) every Friday from 5pm through 7pm when drinks are half-price.

European princes optional.
