North American Cowgirls Unite!

Louise Hawson goes on the road looking for a dude ranch…or just a ranch.

There is no place quite like North America to indulge one’s inner cowgirl.  First thing to consider (if you have any hope of roping that horse/good lookin’ cowboy) is what you’re going to wear. You can buy your western gear when you arrive in the US or get organised ahead of time by shopping online at www.sheplers.com. They’ve got the button-down checkered western shirt with piping at the yolk and pearl snaps and those python cowboy boots you’ll need if you want to look the part.

Then it’s a matter of choosing between the different styles of horse ranch. The most basic is the working ranch where you’re expected to muck in and help. If you’re looking for something more luxurious where you won’t have to lift a manicured finger, a ‘dude ranch’ is probably a better bet. They’re often more like resorts with gourmet food and facilities such as swimming pools, saunas and spas.

The last thing you need to decide is where in the US you’d like to play out your cowgirl fantasy. Montana and Colorado are most famous for their ranches, offering spectacular scenery, amazing hospitality and a wide variety of activities aside from horseback riding, including white-water rafting, kayaking and rock climbing.
Colorado has 29 ranches on offer, all members of the Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association. Visit www.coloradoranch.com for more details.

If “Big Sky” Montana takes your fancy head to www.montanadra.com and check out the range of working, resort and dude ranches across this incredible state.

The choice is almost overwhelming but wherever you choose, one thing’s for sure – y’all gonna have a doggone good time!
