Not a fan of tents? How about a stay in a vintage fire engine, double decker bus, airstream caravan or even a disused helicopter? ‘Staycations’ have been our idea of a holiday in the last couple of years. So, trying to find imaginative ways of enjoying the UK is my main hobby. Imagine my joy when I discovered Blackberry Wood in Hassocks Sussex. A campsite but with a difference. You can go down the tent route, or you can stay in one of their amazing converted vehicles, or a treehouse, or cabin.
Blackberry Wood itself is gorgeous, and the site in the Sussex countryside a short drive from Brighton, is also very ecological. Using old vehicles has to be the pinnacle of recycling right?
Due to my son being a Fireman Sam fan we opted for the fire engine. And we weren’t disappointed. Inside was decorated with fire engine everything, even down to cupboard handles, there was a comfortable sleeping and eating section, a small functional kitchen as well as a shower room. It was warm and cosy. My son could even sit in the cab of the vehicle and put the flashing light on whilst wearing a fireman’s hat (I may or may not have done this more than he did). Only way to describe the experience? Fire Engine Glamping!
Outside was a fire-pit and seating area so we could engage in traditional camping activities, such as roasting our marshmallows… It was the most fun camping ever, and I’m definitely opting for the helicopter next time!
