Go to the open-air Hobart Farm Gate Market for the best food in Tasmania.
You can pick up coffee or breakfast from a van and sit down with your bag or trolley. (It’s plastic-bag free). And while the markets don’t open until 8:30am the Farmy Grub Hub is open for coffee and breakfast from 8.00am.
Farm Gate Market is in the centre of town. It’s on the corner of Murray and Elizabeth Street, steps from the Mall.
Gourmet Doughnuts
Gourmet doughnuts do attract queues. Try Tiramisu, Crème Brulee and Strawberry Jelly.
Vegetables, Herbs, Beef and Lamb
This is the place to skip the supermarket and buy in-season vegetables and herbs. The steak and lamb is free-range.
Fresh Flowers
Bunches of flowers (look for Tasmanian natives) are a regular Farm Gate draw.
From 8.30am to 1.00pm on Sunday
Turn up at opening time, 8.30am on Sunday (when the bell rings) and there are very few people around.
There is fresh, clean air coming down from the mountain, hand-gel at the gate – and some incredible farm, organic and home kitchen temptations.
Farm Gate Market is on, rain or shine. So just turn up. It shuts at 1.00pm.
Taylor & Smith Dry Gin
You can buy red and white award-winning Tasmanian wine at Farm Gate Market but also Taylors’ Dry Gin ($89 retail).
It’s made in batches of 200 bottles and has won Gold at the Gin Tasting Australia Spirit awards 2020.
Taylor’s Gin contains home garden-grown sage, abalone shell from their dives in Tasmania, Huon Pine needles and red grapefruit. It’s in chic blue bottles you can recycle as vases and goes well with tonic water and rosemary.
Recipe Suggestion:
Buy Tasmanian food in season and cook accordingly. Like this –

Wursthaus is a 15-minute walk from Farm Gate Market at 1 Montpelier Retreat, Hobart 7004. They also sell food-to-go and frozen home-made dinner. Sunday 10.00am to 5.00pm.
