Lapland in Finland is Christmas magic. The home of the real Santa, as well as reindeer, husky dogs, snowmobiles and of course, lots of snow. We set off on our search for Santa, who we found in a cabin in a snowy wood, surrounded by naughty elves.
Our accommodation was
The Star Artic hotel in Saariselka in a glass roofed cabin which in theory you could watch the Northern Lights from – unfortunately they didn’t appear – but our main aim was to see the man himself.
It was cold and dark when we arrived – there is very little sunlight and by midday it’s like nighttime – we were kitted out with proper snow outfits and boots to keep warm. Maybe not my best fashion moment but still…We enjoyed a short but packed three-night stay. As well as meeting Santa we went husky sledding, with the opportunity to drive the dogs ourselves. There were a number of other snowy activities, from tobogganing to ice fishing, meeting reindeers, or driving snowmobiles.
It is one of the most wonderful places I’ve visited, it really is picture postcard perfect. Not just for kids either, the food was great, and plentiful; we even enjoyed a wilderness dinner in the middle of a snowy forest. There were hot drinks aplenty to keep us warm everywhere we went. And although meeting Santa was a true highlight, the beautiful reindeer sleigh ride was one of the magical moments of our trip if not our lives.
