Does any woman want to? And why should you?
The Economy and the Mini
Three years after an economic boom, mini skirts always take off. That’s the theory anyway, according to the Erasmus School of Economics. In 2021 the UK economy grew by the fastest rate since the war. So in 2024-2025 hemlines went up again and mini skirts were back in fashion.
In 2026, the mini has vanished again. Petrol prices (gas prices in the US) have gone up and the world economy is looking shaky.
Does that mean you have to forget the mini, though?
If you’re over 40 there’s another reason. In fact, it’s almost a rule of fashion. Keep your hemlines at your knee and below. Kate Moss went knee-length (with bare legs) at Paris Fashion Week and reminded us she was 52. And there are laws about that.
Black Opaque Tights And…?
If you want to help the economy and don’t care about Fashion Laws, maybe you can buck a trend by matching a black mini skirt with black opaque tights and black heels. This old Jessica Alba and Kyra Sedgwick look could be up for revival – even if you don’t feel up to Alexa Chung’s take on the mini (she is now 42 for the record – her Chanel bag and Mary Janes ensemble was a few years ago now).
Wearing a Mini at 70
Seventy-year-old Jo Good models different looks on YouTube as The Middle Aged Minx. She is a charismatic Londoner with 80,000+ followers and a daily yoga habit. She also refuses to obey fashion laws. In fact she appeared on This Morning (ITV) in a mini.
“I grew up in the Sixties,” she says, “when the A-line Mary Quant mini drew appreciative glances. Now, as a 70-year-old, opaque tights are a must. It’s all about a streamlined look, with no bare flesh showing, to create a discreet, Parisienne silhouette.”
Mary Quant
So famous she’s appeared on stamps, Mary Quant made the mini the number one Sixties skirt. If you were under the age of 30 and not in either a mini length skirt or shift dress in the 1960s you looked out of date – thanks to her.
