The Chakras in India
This image by Dustin Humes (above) shows the classical chakra colours, from left to right. From the base of your spine upwards, you move through the red, orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo colours, towards white light at the top of your head.

Indians have hummed or chanted the tones/notes of the seven chakras for centuries. Each chakra rules a different part of our body, mind or spirit – from the top of your head, to the base of your spine. Balancing these – meditating while humming – is said to increase relaxation and happiness.

Those in the know who regularly chant or hum (tone or tune) their chakras say it’s life changing.  It also helps calm the breath.

The Beatles Used Chakra Notes
Ever wondered why The Beatles became so successful, in so many countries, for so many years? (Around sixty and counting).

Intuitively, or maybe consciously (George Harrison was friends with Ravi Shankar and a devotee of Indian culture) these musicians composed around the chakra notes. Tibetan singing bowls work along a similar principle.

What Psychics Know About Chakras
The chakras are the coloured/toned energy centres – which psychics can see – which begin at your head and end at the base of your spine. The chakras rule different aspects of your personality. The red base chakra, right at your tailbone (felt strongly when sitting down in a yoga cross-legged posture) is about survival. It grounds you and stabilises you.

Going right up to the top or crown of your head – that seventh chakra is about your connection to the spirit world and to a universe where time and space have different rules. It is sometimes seen as violet, but also white.

White works really well if you want to try visualising now.

These chakras are often shown as perfect, block colour circles in books, or on websites. In actual fact, to many professional psychics who are also clairvoyant (clear seeing) they are more like spinning wheels, with an almost electric/neon quality.

How to Sit and Hum or ‘Bee Breathe’ the Chords
If you are musical, you will already be able to hum these. At home today, you will be going through each of your chakras in turn, sitting in a loose cross-legged position on the floor, or on your bed mattress.

If you’d rather sit more comfortably, that’s fine too but try to keep your head-to-hipbones line straight. Don’t slouch or bend. Think of yourself as an instrument to be tuned, like an upright acoustic guitar.

Bee Breathing – Buzzing a Note in Your Body
Again, if you have time at home – just use YouTube to source the notes. You’ll find pianos, guitars, singers all there to uncover. Finding your version of a note is personal to you. 

If you are musical you will be able to remember and ‘call in’ the note when you meditate, humming or ‘bee breathing’ (buzzing the sound through your nose and throat). More on that in a moment!

Doing this toning, or tuning, can leave you feeling amazing. You won’t know until you try. Some people report feeling more balanced, settled, whole, attuned, grounded.

Get into a rhythm so you are not breathless. If you are interested in breathing techniques, head straight to yoga teachers online who can help you with that. Alternate nostril breathing, for example, can help to calm and regulate your breath.

Deep Humming with a Hard Day’s Night
At home, today, you can find some music clips on YouTube or use your own collection, to ‘deep hum’ (also called toning) particular notes, which will help you balance your chakra system.

For this particular session, find A Hard Day’s Night on YouTube (or in your own collection). You’re sourcing the very first chord. Loud. Ringing. Vibrating. Unmistakeable.

There are a few clips on YouTube including straight guitar versions. Find one you like.

A Hard Day’s Night with Soothing Sounds
The most famous chord in music is the unmistakable ‘twang’ you hear the start of A Hard Day’s Night. George Harrison claimed it was “F with a G on top, but you’ll have to ask Paul about the bass note to get the full story.

Why the Beatles’ Music is Special
Was it their time in India, and among Indian musicians (thanks to George Harrison) or was it something else? The Beatles’ music is frequently built around frequencies that chime with the chakras. If you have ever listened to The White Album, for example, or even just one of the many number one hit singles the band created – you’ll be tuning into strong, clear, chakra notes played in powerful and beautiful harmonies.

You can find A Hard Day’s Night now in any version you like on YouTube. Remember and hum the first chord, repeatedly, trying to make the noise vibrate in your head, then further down in your throat and neck, then down through your chest and so on.

Four Notes – F, A, C and G
The four notes in the Fadd9 chord are F, A, C and G. This is where the power comes from, as you repeatedly hum or tone the sound (or as close as you can get to it: remember this was The Beatles and this is you in your bedroom!)

You’ll find a few variations on this idea of chakras relating to musical notes. The expert to turn to is John Michell, who gave this sequence – below. All these notes turn up in that Beatles’ chord.

The Table of Correspondences
John Michell (1933-2009) was a specialist in ancient, traditional science. He graduated from Eton and Cambridge to dedicate is career to Glastonbury and Stonehenge, for a time.

The Glastonbury Festival of 1971 featured a stage built to emulate the pyramid of Cheops, using Michell’s calculations. The festival hosted David Bowie and Traffic. Michell even guided the Rolling Stones on a UFO expedition around Stonehenge.

He knew music and he knew mysteries. No wonder the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury is still going strong today.

This table of correspondences comes from Michell’s wonderful book, Sacred Geometry (Thames & Hudson, London 2009).

  • F – Venus, Green, Copper, Emerald
  • A – Moon, White, Silver, Pearl
  • C – Jupiter, Blue, Tin, Sapphire
  • G – Mercury, Indigo, Quicksilver, Amethyst


Green Heart Chakra Tones
George Harrison said the chord was ‘F with a G on top’ (almost right, according to the experts) so he was picking up on Green (the heart chakra) with Indigo/Amethyst) the third eye chakra of psychic ability.

How incredible is that? No wonder the whole world fell in love with the A Hard Day’s Night. Heart and head.

Meditating on Colours
As you repeat hum the chord, visualise yourself bathed in the colours. Focus on each of your chakras using the colours.

As you can see, The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night chord tunes into Green, White, Blue and Indigo – according to John Michell’s Table of Correspondences. You can create quite a powerful chakra tune-up meditation for yourself by humming (or bee-breathing) the sound, pausing to regulate your breath, then repeating.

Think Like a Bee

Use “Bee Breath” to Get Anxiety to Buzz Off

“Lengthening exhalation relative to inhalation reduces the ‘fight or flight’ impulse and maintains a healthy level of carbon dioxide in the blood, which helps you relax. So, keeping the lips lightly sealed, inhale through the nostrils.”

As you do this, focus on the colours in your mind’s eye and see them glowing on and around your body.

The best meditation is created by you and adapted by you but following the ancient rules. Here’s a reminder of the chakras in relation to the sounds in the Hard Day’s Night chord again.

Breathing Like a Bee – Video

Breathing Through the Colours
You can create a rainbow or colour field to meditate with – or you can cycle your way through the colours. You might want to start at your throat (blue) work your way down to your heart (green) then go to your solar plexus (yellow) and finally down to your base or root chakra.

For a moment, tailor and personalise that Beatles’ chord to yourself. Remember to try and ‘find’ it (or as close as you can get to it. Hum it and move that ‘hum’ up and down your body.

You could even jump around a little. You don’t have to start at the top and work down. As you tone/tune your chakras with sound and colour, experimenting with a meditation which is just right for you, you will be balancing emotions and feelings (heart), communication, writing and speaking (throat), psychic ability and intuition (third eye) and your connection to the universe (crown).

The Mysteries of A Hard Day’s Night
If you are musical, you’ll know that this powerful, mysterious, compelling opening chord has mystified people for years. The excellent site Wilktone gives this explanation: it was the fifth Beatle, the band’s producer, Sir George Martin on a Steinway piano. They call it ‘the magical mystery chord.’ 

Strange and Powerful – The Multi-Chakra Chord

As you use the opening chord of A Hard Day’s Night with its multi-chakra tuning sounds, to build a meditation, enjoy the fact that you are listening to the five Beatles (including their producer Sir George Martin) and not just John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Why The Beatles Get You in the Solar Plexus
Harrison played the chord on a Rickenbacker 360/12 (12 string guitar) and the track was immortalised on 16th April 1964. The single became the hit theme to the film, A Hard Day’s Night.

But here’s the thing. Harrison said the chord was ‘an Fadd 9’. So, it falls somewhere around the chakra tone for the solar plexus. The centre of your body.

The Beatles’ Bible, the best source online for the band, has a very good explanation of the strangeness and charm of the opening sound.

As Harrison pointed out, his 12-string wasn’t the only instrument to be heard during the chord. John Lennon also performed an Fadd9, using a Gibson J-160 6-string acoustic guitar.”

A variation on the chord can be heard in Blackbird on The White Album, Paul McCartney’s masterpiece. Here is how to play the chord at home.

If you are musical, then you will get even more out of your meditation if you can play guitar, say, or the piano. (And everyone else around you has soundproofing, of course).

Did Prince and Ed Sheehan Know?
Prince put the solar plexus sound down on Purple Rain. The very same chord. From Harrison’s point of view, it was a Fadd 9.

Maybe there’s a reason why Ed Sheehan chose it for his chords in Supermarket Flowers.

The Solar Plexus chakra is called Manipura in India. Its colour is yellow. Its speed mantra is Ram (rang). It is said to rule transcendence of physical desire in meditation.
